HIV/AIDS TECHNICAL WORKING GROUP

February 4, 2024February 4, 2024 FAMSAUncategorized

HIV/AIDs continues to be a major global public health issue with the African region most affected with 25.7 million people living with HIV in 2018 according to WHO. The African region furthermore, accounts for almost two thirds of total new HIV infections globally. There is no cure for HIV, however, there is substantial benefit in preventing and controlling transmission as people can enjoy healthy and productive lives. Hence, the call for African medical students to be part of the FAMSA HIV/AIDS technical working group in pursuit of our mission towards improvement of healthcare in Africa.

Objectives of the Group

  1. To be at the forefront in the fight against HIV/AIDs in Africa.
  2. To advocate and drive urgent action to reduce the impact of HIV by promoting HIV prevention strategies and linkage to care.
  3. To amplify the voices of the vulnerable especially Students living with HIV to influence policy across HIV prevention to care continuum.
  4. To increase awareness about challenges of people living with HIV such as TB coinfection, ART access, and stigmatisation.

Roles of the Group

  1. Provide up-to-date information on HIV/AIDs for FAMSA online campaign and other activities that will be agreed upon.
  2. Work with FAMSA executive council to involve medical students from across Africa to end AIDS epidemic by 2030 through community outreaches, research, and innovations
  3. Hold campaigns engaging young people and dialogues to influence and direct students’ needs in the HIV/AIDs response.
