EXCERPTS FROM THE 38TH GENERAL ASSEMBLY AND SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE

The 38th General Assembly (GA) and Scientific Conference held at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Nigeria, from November 3rd to 8th, 2024. The conference was themed “Aligning Global Practices with Local Realities for Healthcare Transformation in Africa.”

Highlighting the Theme: Localizing Global Healthcare Practices

The conference focused on bridging the gap between international healthcare standards and Africa’s unique local challenges. The keynote address titled, ” Aligning global practices with local realities for healthcare transformation in Africa” was delivered by Dr. Matshido Moeti (Regional Director for Africa,World Health Organiation (WHO)) who was represented by Dr Walter Kazadi Mulumbo (WHO Representative in Nigeria.) He emphasized the critical need to adapt global best practices to suit African contexts, ensuring that healthcare innovations address specific regional needs.

Engaging Sessions and Expert Panels

The four-day event featured parallel sessions, panel discussions, and interactive workshops that explored a broad range of topics, such as:

  • Innovations in Primary Healthcare Delivery: Focused on leveraging technology and telemedicine to improve access to care in underserved regions.
  • Mental Health and Wellbeing in Africa: Addressing stigma, cultural barriers, and effective intervention strategies for mental health.
  • Climate Change and Health: Examining the impact of environmental changes on public health and strategies for climate resilience in healthcare systems.
  • Digital Health Transformation: Exploring the integration of artificial intelligence, data analytics, and telemedicine in transforming healthcare delivery.

Workshops and Networking Opportunities

Participants engaged in hands-on workshops focusing on research methodologies, clinical skills training, and entrepreneurship in healthcare, empowering young medical professionals to think innovatively about solving health challenges in their regions. The conference also featured interactive sessions, fostering connections between experienced practitioners and the next generation of healthcare leaders.
