THE EXECUTIVE COUNCIL 2025/26

This consists of office holders who are elected at the General Assembly and the Administrator of the Permanent Headquarters. The body is charged with carrying out specific duties assigned at the General Assembly and specified in the FAMSA Constitution.


President: Yusuf Auwal Yahaya

Yusuf Auwal Yahya Kura is a Nigerian medical student, public health advocate, and youth leader dedicated to advancing health equity, social justice, and inclusive policymaking across Africa and beyond. He currently serves as the President of the Federation of African Medical Students’ Associations (FAMSA), where he leads continental advocacy efforts amplifying medical students’ voices in health policy, medical education reform, and global health governance.

Active in student and public health advocacy since 2020, Yusuf has held multiple leadership roles at institutional, national, and continental levels. His work centres on health policy and diplomacy, youth participation in decision-making, diversity and inclusion, and the protection of marginalised populations, including migrants, refugees, and underserved communities. He consistently advocates for rights-based, people-centred approaches to health systems strengthening.

He is the founder of Afro-Asian Youths for Population and Peace, a transcontinental movement mobilising young people across Africa and Asia to advocate for family planning, sexual and reproductive health and rights, gender equality, peacebuilding, climate justice, and youth economic empowerment. Through cross-regional dialogue and grassroots engagement, the movement seeks to influence policy, foster solidarity, and promote sustainable development.

In addition to advocacy, Yusuf is engaged in social entrepreneurship within the agricultural sector, promoting sustainability and inclusive value chains. He aspires to contribute to international health governance and strengthen Africa’s voice in global health advocacy and policy spaces.”



Vice President: Wahida Hamad Ali

Wahida Hamad Ali is a Tanzanian medical student distinguished by her commitment to medical education, leadership, and service. Guided by a profound dedication to saving lives and empowering communities, she upholds the belief that medicine extends beyond clinical spaces into purposeful, compassionate leadership that inspires young people across Africa.

She currently serves as Vice President of the Federation of African Medical Students’ Associations (FAMSA), contributing to continental initiatives that strengthen medical education, student advocacy, and collaborative engagement. Her leadership trajectory within FAMSA includes service as Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Medical Education and Research (SCOMER) and prior experience as a Local Officer within the same committee, reflecting a consistent record of progressive and impact-driven service.

Nationally, she has held key roles within the Tanzania Medical Students’ Association (TAMSA), including General Secretary of the Training Support Division. In this capacity, she coordinated and implemented structured training programs for both local and international medical students, fostering inclusive platforms for professional development and capacity building.

Her work extends to MedTech engagement in Tanzania. She is actively involved in the AWiB MedTech Group Tanzania, a platform dedicated to advancing medical education, innovation, and health technology among medical students across Africa. With notable strength in project management, she has led initiatives in menstrual hygiene advocacy, first aid training, mental health awareness, and sickle cell disease advocacy. Recognised as a Millennium Fellow, Class of 2024, she remains steadfast in advancing global health and empowering future African medical leaders.

Aliyu Ila Ahmad serves as General Treasurer of the Federation of African Medical Students’ Associations (FAMSA) for the 2025/2026 tenure. In this capacity, he oversees the financial administration of the Association, upholding principles of transparency, accountability, and responsible stewardship. His role is central to ensuring the effective allocation of resources in support of initiatives that advance medical education, student engagement, and healthcare advocacy across Africa.

A passionate Nigerian medical student and committed leader, Aliyu is guided by service, integrity, and a deep belief in collective progress. He views leadership not merely as a position of authority, but as a responsibility to create sustainable systems, amplify diverse voices, and strengthen institutions for long-term impact. His approach emphasises structure, clarity, and measurable outcomes, ensuring that organisational processes remain efficient and resilient.

Beyond his formal responsibilities, Aliyu is dedicated to personal growth and continuous learning. His interests include reading, driving, and mentoring others—activities that reflect his commitment to self-development and to inspiring those around him. Through disciplined service and principled leadership, he remains focused on contributing meaningfully to the advancement of African medical students and the broader healthcare landscape.


General Secretary: Muhammad Mudassir Shehu

Muhammad Mudassir Shehu serves as General Secretary of the Federation of African Medical Students’ Associations (FAMSA). He is a medical student at the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences, Federal University Dutse, Nigeria, with academic and professional interests spanning research, surgery, leadership, technology, and sustainable development.

He has held several strategic leadership positions, including Chief of Staff of the NIMSA Emerging Leaders Forum, General Secretary of the NIMSA Directorate of Non-Infectious and Non-Communicable Diseases, MSA Officer at FAMSA-SCOMER, Deputy Director for Capacity Building and Medical Education at FUDUMSA, and Head of the Neuroscience Journal Club at the Federal University Dutse Medical Research Society. Through these roles, he has demonstrated a consistent commitment to capacity building, institutional strengthening, and student engagement.

As an emerging student leader, Muhammad is dedicated to enhancing institutional efficiency, promoting transparent and accountable governance, and strengthening collaboration among African medical students’ associations and health-sector stakeholders. His vision centres on nurturing a united, professionally competent generation of African medical students prepared to advance equity, innovation, and sustainable health systems.

In his role as General Secretary, he prioritises institutional development, effective communication and coordination, and fostering unity among member associations, thereby contributing to stronger and more sustainable healthcare systems across Africa and beyond.

Assistant General Secretary: Navisino Z Kate

Navisino Z. Kate is a Kenyan third-year medical student with a strong interest in leadership, advocacy, and developing resilient systems that effectively support medical students. She currently serves as Assistant General Secretary of the Federation of African Medical Students’ Associations (FAMSA), where she works collaboratively with diverse teams to ensure the smooth coordination and administration of the Federation’s activities.

Her leadership journey, including service as Vice President of her Medical Students’ Association (MSA), has been defined by a sincere commitment to service, improved communication, and accountability within student governance structures. She brings a structured and detail-oriented approach to leadership, often working behind the scenes to maintain organisation and support teams in transforming ideas into measurable outcomes. Through these experiences, she has cultivated a deep appreciation for collaboration, consistency, and inclusive leadership.

Within FAMSA, Navisino is particularly passionate about enhancing member engagement, strengthening institutional memory, and fostering inclusive spaces where medical students from all regions feel represented and heard. Her broader interests include public health, student welfare, and initiatives that promote sustainable, people-centred development.

She remains committed to continuous learning and collaborative growth, working alongside fellow leaders to build a more connected, effective, and impactful Federation.

Blessed Olaomo is a fifth-year medical student at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, distinguished by a strong academic record and a sustained commitment to leadership, research, and community health. He currently serves as Administrator of the Federation of African Medical Students’ Associations (FAMSA) Headquarters, where he coordinates communication, partnerships, and archival processes while supporting strategic initiatives that enhance the Association’s continental impact. He previously served as Secretary of the Headquarters’ Board during the 2024/2025 tenure.

Academically, He is deeply passionate about cardiovascular health and preventive medicine, with research interests focused on non-communicable diseases, risk factor modification, and early detection strategies. He leads the Cardiovascular Health B Journal Club at the College Research and Innovation Hub, University College Hospital, Ibadan, fostering student-led research and innovation in cardiovascular care.

Beyond academia, he is actively engaged in community service through the Nigerian Red Cross Society, UCH, where he serves as General Secretary and contributes to various health outreach and humanitarian initiatives.

Driven by a vision to strengthen healthcare systems across Africa, He aspires to specialise in cardiology and advance equitable, sustainable healthcare delivery across the continent. His personal interests include cooking, music, and football.

Regional Coordinator, FAMSA West Africa: Samuel Oluwatobi Atoyebi

Samuel Atoyebi is a 400-Level medical student of the Igbinedion University Medical Students Association (IUMSA), Igbinedion University, Okada, Edo State, Nigeria. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and Religious Studies from the University of Benin, a background that has refined his critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and disciplined intellectual approach.

He is the Founder of Top Grade Tutorial, an academic initiative dedicated to preparing students for excellence in Anatomy, Biochemistry, and Physiology. Within continental and local student leadership, he served as a FAMSA Officer for IUMSA (2025) and as Program and Design Officer for the Standing Committee on Medical Education and Research (SCOMER) in 2025. He is also a member of the Psychiatry Interest Group Africa (PIGA) and currently leads a Research Interest Group focused on Public Health.

A philosopher at heart with a firm belief in the practicality and originality of ideas, Samuel applies analytical depth to medicine and community health. He has actively participated in medical outreaches across schools, markets, and local communities within and beyond Okada Township. His engagement extends to major platforms, including the African Youth Health Summit Abuja 2025 and the 38th (2024) and 39th (2025) FAMSA General Assemblies and Scientific Conferences.


Regional Coordinator, FAMSA East Africa: Ian Kimutai Bowen

Ian Kimutai Bowen is a Kenyan medical student and public health advocate currently serving as East African Regional Coordinator of the Federation of African Medical Students’ Associations (FAMSA). He previously held the position of Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Population Activities (SCOPA), where he provided continental leadership in population health advocacy and youth engagement.

With experience spanning student governance, public health advocacy, digital innovation, and cross-border program coordination, Bowen adopts a strategic, people-centred, and results-oriented approach to leadership. His areas of focus include youth engagement, sexual and reproductive health, family planning, mental health, and equitable access to quality health education across Africa.

As SCOPA Chairperson, he contributed to the development of advocacy toolkits, coordinated continent-wide awareness campaigns, and strengthened the committee’s visibility as a solutions-driven platform within FAMSA. In his current regional role, he prioritises collaboration among East African medical students’ associations, regional capacity strengthening, and enhanced student representation.

Beyond his continental engagement, Bowen serves as Vice President of Finance (Region C) of the Medical Students Association of Kenya (MSAKE) and mentors emerging student leaders. Guided by service and institutional vision, he remains committed to building resilient structures, empowering future medical leaders, and advancing equitable and sustainable global health across Africa.


Regional Coordinator, FAMSA Central Africa: Limen Kudion Romuald Steve

Limen Kudion is a third-year medical student at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Buea, Cameroon. He is deeply passionate about delivering holistic patient care and is actively engaged in mental health advocacy, research, and mentorship initiatives.

Throughout his academic journey, Limen has held several positions of responsibility within student-led and community-based organisations, including the Cameroon Medical Students’ Association, Model Initiative of Africa, and the Knowledge Centre. His participation in various workshops and professional development programs has broadened his perspective on leadership, research, and healthcare advocacy, shaping a well-rounded and forward-thinking approach to medicine.

Beyond his academic commitments, Limen values personal development through extracurricular engagement. He enjoys reading, singing in a choir, and playing football—activities he views not merely as recreation but as avenues for strengthening discipline, teamwork, and interpersonal skills.

As he advances in his medical career, Limen is committed to improving the quality of patient care and contributing to innovative research that enhances clinical procedures and healthcare delivery systems. His long-term vision centres on strengthening the healthcare system in Cameroon and contributing meaningfully to broader health improvements across Africa. He remains open to collaborations and initiatives aligned with these goals.

Regional Coordinator, FAMSA Northern Africa: Oumnia Anfer

Oumnia Anfer is a medical student at the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy of Casablanca, Morocco, with a distinguished commitment to Planetary Health advocacy and climate action. Her dedication to sustainable health systems has positioned her at the intersection of medicine, environmental stewardship, and youth leadership.

She previously served as the Contact Point of the YOUNGO Health Working Group, representing the group at the Health Steering Committee of the COP28 Presidency. In addition, she was a Regional Lead for the Public Health Report Card (PHRC), an initiative assessing the integration of Planetary Health into medical curricula.

Oumnia is an Ambassador of the African Youth Climate Hub and serves on the Steering Group of the Youth UNESCO Climate Action Network (YoU-CAN) as Secretary, contributing to youth-led climate governance and policy engagement. She is also recognised as a Climate Action Champion by UNICEF Morocco, reflecting her active role in advancing climate awareness and community-driven solutions.

Within continental student leadership, she serves as Regional Coordinator for North Africa at the Federation of African Medical Students’ Associations (FAMSA), where she works to strengthen collaboration, representation, and climate-health advocacy among medical students across the region.


Regional Coordinator, FAMSA Southern Africa: Buhle Elsie Dube

Buhle Elsie Dube is a third-year medical student at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST), Zimbabwe, and an emerging leader in medical student advocacy, global health diplomacy, and external relations. She currently serves as Vice President of External Affairs (VPE) of the Zimbabwe Medical Students Association (ZiMSA), where she manages institutional partnerships, strengthens stakeholder engagement, and represents Zimbabwean medical students at national, regional, and international platforms. She serves as Southern Africa Regional Coordinator for the Federation of African Medical Students’ Associations (FAMSA), supporting inter-country collaboration, strategic communication, and regional student representation.

During the 2024/2025 term, Buhle served as ZiMSA National Preclinical Representative, advocating for preclinical students’ academic interests, welfare, and meaningful participation in national programs. Her leadership extends beyond Zimbabwe, demonstrating a commitment to regional and continental collaboration within medical student networks. Her leadership portfolio extends beyond Zimbabwe, having served as the Southern Africa Regional Coordinator for the Federation of African Medical Students’ Associations (FAMSA) during the 2024/25 tenure.

Buhle is actively involved with the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA), contributing to initiatives in medical education, global health advocacy, and capacity building. She is dedicated to leveraging leadership, partnerships, and advocacy to strengthen medical education and health systems in Zimbabwe, Southern Africa, Africa, and the global health community.


Chairperson, SCOMER: Elton Mussa Mahulu

Elton Mussa Mahulu is a fifth-year Doctor of Medicine (MD) candidate at St. Francis University College of Health and Allied Sciences (SFUCHAS), Tanzania. He is a dedicated medical trainee with strong interests in research, leadership, and health systems strengthening, particularly within low- and middle-income country contexts.

Beyond his academic pursuits, Elton is an accomplished student leader. He currently holds strategic roles within the Tanzania Medical Students’ Association (TAMSA) and serves as Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Medical Education and Research (SCOMER) at the Federation of African Medical Students’ Associations (FAMSA). In these capacities, he has coordinated multiple national and regional capacity-building initiatives, webinars, and mentorship programs, bridging research, leadership, and advocacy.

Elton’s research interests focus on clinical research, health policy, and capacity building for emerging researchers. He aspires to pursue advanced research training and contribute to the development of stronger health systems in Africa through evidence-based, data-driven solutions.

Mary Clepinus Rugakingira is a fifth-year medical student at St. Joseph University College of Health and Allied Sciences (SJCHAS), driven by a strong commitment to community welfare and population health. She integrates leadership and advocacy into her medical journey to address pressing health challenges.

Mary currently serves as Chairperson of the FAMSA Standing Committee on Population Activities (SCOPA), bringing extensive experience in student governance and community health initiatives. She previously served for two years as Alumni Relations Support Division Coordinator for TAMSA SJCHAS, where she honed skills in project management, professional networking, and organisational leadership. As a Millennium Fellow, she led impactful initiatives promoting sexual and reproductive health education for adolescents.

Her mission within SCOPA focuses on uniting medical students globally to address critical issues such as Gender-Based Violence (GBV), mental health, and healthcare accessibility. Through active participation in community workshops and volunteer programs, including prosthetic limb camps for amputees, Mary has witnessed the transformative power of collective action. Guided by the philosophy, “What you focus on expands,” she remains dedicated to fostering sustainable development, international collaboration, and meaningful impact in global health.

Chairperson, SCOHE: Tumwebaze Emily Mpora

Tumwebaze Emily Mpora is a third-year Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) student at Makerere University Medical Students’ Association, Uganda. Her engagement with the Federation of African Medical Students’ Associations (FAMSA) began when she represented her MSA in the policy team for the 74th session of the WHO African Region Committee Meeting, and she later served as a moderator in the policy training workshop for the 75th session.

Emily has held multiple leadership and operational roles within FAMSA, including Graphics Design Officer for the Technical Working Group on HIV/AIDS (2023–2024) and Publications Officer for both SCOMER and the East African Regional Council (2024–2025). She also contributed to the organisation of the East African Regional Malnutrition Campaign, demonstrating a strong commitment to health advocacy and student engagement.

Her notable achievements include being recognised as Best Article Writer for the 3rd issue of the 2nd volume of the NUTRICONNECT Newsletter, earning 1st Runner-Up in the National Interuniversity Competition on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) through art in 2025, and securing 1st Runner-Up with her team, the Suberbug Fighters, in Makerere University’s AMR poster challenge in 2024. She also serves as Class Representative for MBChB Year 3.

In her free time, Emily enjoys listening to podcasts, watching movies, learning new languages, and designing posters, combining creativity with her passion for health advocacy and education.


Chairperson, SCOPUB: Kauthar Zhara Salaudeen Giwa

Giwa Kauthar Zhara is a medical student at Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) with a strong passion for public health, medical communication, and academic publishing. She has consistently contributed to student-led and community-based initiatives, guided by a commitment to service, leadership, and improving health outcomes.

Her leadership experience includes serving as Public Health Director of the Mbarara University Medical Students’ Association (MBUMSA) and previously as Public Health Director for the Red Cross at MUST Link. In these roles, she has coordinated health awareness campaigns, community outreach programs, and advocacy initiatives addressing non-communicable diseases, substance abuse prevention, and general health promotion.

At the regional level, Zhara served as Publicity Secretary of the FAMSA East Africa Regional Council, supporting digital engagement, content creation, and publication efforts for member associations. She is also a member of the Editorial Team of the Mbarara University Medical Journal (MUMJ), gaining hands-on experience in manuscript review, editing, and academic publishing processes.

Joseph Sundano Samwinga is the Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Professional Exchange (SCOPE) within the Federation of African Medical Students’ Associations (FAMSA). He is a final-year MBChB student and MSc candidate in Epidemiology & Biostatistics at the University of Zambia, School of Medicine, combining clinical training with public health research to bridge patient care, evidence-based practice, and global health collaboration.

Joseph has established himself as a visionary leader in student advocacy and continental medical education networks. He has coordinated initiatives that empower peers, strengthen institutional partnerships, and promote innovative approaches to public health outreach, particularly in HIV prevention and medical education. His creative engagement through storytelling and multimedia has amplified health equity efforts across Africa.

As SCOPE Chairperson, Joseph is committed to expanding professional exchange opportunities for African medical students, fostering cross-cultural competence, and advancing collaborative research. His leadership emphasises clarity, inclusivity, and measurable impact, ensuring that exchange programs enhance clinical training while building solidarity among future health leaders. He envisions empowering medical students to become agents of change, advancing health equity and global partnerships across the continent.


Special Executive 1 (French Translator): Prevail Damilotun Adesina

Prevail Damilotun Adesina is a sixth-year medical student at the Faculté des Sciences de la Santé, Université de Lomé, Togo. He currently serves as Special Executive I (French Translator) for the Federation of African Medical Students’ Associations (FAMSA) for the 2025/2026 mandate.

In this role, Prevail supports FAMSA’s mission by translating official communications into French, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and accessibility for Francophone medical students across Africa. He is dedicated to improving information flow within the Federation and bridging communication gaps between Anglophone and Francophone members.

Prevail’s interests include public health, human rights, and peace, underpinned by a belief that effective communication is essential for meaningful advocacy and collaboration. Fluent in both French and English, he brings a multicultural perspective to his work and values cooperation across linguistic and cultural backgrounds.

Through his engagement with FAMSA, Prevail is committed to fostering inclusive dialogue, enhancing student participation in continental initiatives, and contributing to a more connected, informed, and collaborative community of African medical students, all while advancing the vision of equitable healthcare for all.


Special Executive 2 (Arabic Translator): Zainab Osama Elnoor Elsharif

Zainab Osama Elnour Elsharif is a third-year medical student at Al-Butana University, Gezira State, Sudan, with over four years of volunteering experience and extensive leadership involvement. She served as Regional Coordinator for North Africa at the Federation of African Medical Students’ Associations (FAMSA) during 2024–2025 and has held multiple leadership positions within the Sudan Medical Students’ Forum and the Medical Students’ Association at Al-Butana University, including Executive Director, Advisory Council Member, President, and Capacity Building Director (2022–2023).

In addition, Zainab serves as Public Health Facilitator at the Sudanese Association of Medical Students, a scientific researcher at BASIRA Association, Banha University, Egypt, and founder of a CV design brand. She also trains students in soft skills and self-development, contributes to the Training and Scientific Research Unit at the Pediatric Specialised Hospital, Kassala State, and works as a health promoter and data collector in the medical field.

Her diverse roles—spanning organisation management, media oversight, and project coordination—demonstrate her expertise in leadership, communication, and teamwork. Zainab’s journey reflects a strong dedication to capacity building, public health advocacy, and research, underscoring her commitment to advancing medical education and healthcare development in Sudan and across Africa.


Ex-Officio I – Muhammad Isa Jaafar

Muhammad Isa Jafar is a fifth-year medical student at the Federal University Dutse and a dedicated advocate for public health and medical student leadership. His extensive experience spans local, national, and international platforms, reflecting a commitment to service, governance, and health advocacy.

Locally, Muhammad has served as a Congressman in the University Students Representative Assembly (2020), Parliamentary Secretary, Secretary of the Independent School Electoral Committee (2022), and Organising Officer (2023), demonstrating leadership, integrity, and multitasking capabilities.

At the national level, he has contributed to the Nigerian Medical Students Association (NiMSA), serving as Local Officer for the Standing Committee on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, including HIV/AIDS (SCORA), and as Secretary for the Standing Committee on Research Exchange.

Internationally, Muhammad has played pivotal roles within the Federation of African Medical Students’ Associations (FAMSA), including Program Officer and Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Health and Environment (SCOHE, 2021–2023). He currently serves as Chairperson of the 2024 FAMSA Policy Advisory Council, leading the drafting of over ten policy statements presented at the 74th WHO Afro Committee Meeting in Brazzaville, Congo, and spearheading the development of FAMSA’s internal and external policies as well as the Strategic Plan.

Within the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA), Muhammad is a Certified Trainer, mentoring medical students in leadership and professional development. His multifaceted involvement underscores a deep commitment to advancing health systems, leadership, and student advocacy across Africa and beyond.


Ex-Officio II: Bonventure Onyambu Machuka

Bonventure Machuka is a Kenyan medical student at Moi University, a researcher, and a global health advocate committed to advancing health equity, youth leadership, and inclusive health systems across Africa. He is Vice-President Emeritus of the Federation of African Medical Students’ Associations (FAMSA), having previously served as Vice President, representing African medical students at national, continental, and global platforms.

During his tenure, Bonventure strengthened student-led advocacy, regional collaboration, and policy engagement on critical issues, including universal health coverage, climate and health, gender equity, and medical education reform. He has represented youth and medical students at high-level forums of the United Nations and the World Health Organisation, including the WHO Regional Committee for Africa, contributing to discussions on health policy, workforce development, and health system resilience.

His work spans research, advocacy, and capacity building, with contributions to joint publications and collaborative initiatives with international academic and civil society partners. He maintains a strong interest in evidence-informed policy, health diplomacy, and the intersection of health, peace, and social justice.

As he completes his medical training at Moi University, Bonventure continues to mentor emerging leaders and advance research and advocacy initiatives that support equitable and resilient health systems across Africa and globally.
